Our Story
1964: The Beginning
Richard "Bart" Bartinsdale opens Bart's Books on Matilija Street in Ojai. What started as a way to thin out his personal book collection by leaving books outside with a coffee can for payment grew into something much larger.
The Honor System
Bart pioneered the honor system for book sales, trusting customers to leave payment in a coffee can when the store was closed. This tradition continues today with our 24/7 outdoor shelves.
Growing Collection
As word spread about this unique outdoor bookstore, people began donating their collections. The bookstore expanded to fill multiple courtyards and outdoor spaces, eventually housing over 130,000 books.
National Recognition
Bart's Books gained national attention, featured in publications like The Los Angeles Times, Sunset Magazine, and travel guides as a must-visit destination in California.
Community Hub
